The Eagle Has Flown

Puerto Vallarta

by Freedom Crew on 08/20/10

Well three weeks went by and we made it to Puerto Vallarta.  The Sea of Cortez was peaceful for us to cross.  We are now on the jungle side of the Sea, leaving the arid La Paz behind.  Temps are still hot, but afternoon rains cool it all down.  Mexico is so improved:  great roads, modern facilities, helpful people....  Our marina offers 4 pools from which to choose, "room service" to our slip, hot tubs, yacht club within batting range - great hurricane hole to await Chapter 2!  We will complete some deck work here as well as the installation of central a/c.  The marina offers a full service yard, so our tasks will be easy.  We are so glad we finally did it - left!  You can do it too!  See U out there!

In La Paz

by Freedom Crew on 08/02/10

Freedom is plugged in to her slip at the Marina de La Paz.  The facility if modern, clean and very accommodating.  We have free electrical and wi-fi, showers, security...all for $37 a night.  We have some repairs to do while here:  the mizzen boom broke free from the mast, need to divide the chain locker for two anchors, fix some wires on the alternator, get some fishing tackle and re-provision before we head to Puerto Vallarta.  We have a/c which makes the almost 100 degree temps tolerable.  The bimini has been awesome as the sun from 10 to 5 is absolutely oppressive.  I am going to town later to check on some sun flaps to add to the bimini top.  Kevin has been delayed due to the ceasing of operation of flights out of Sacramento, so he will join us when he can find a flight in.

Leaving Turtle Bay

by Freedom Crew on 07/19/10

Freedom spent last night in Turtle Bay.  We were there last in 2002 during the Ba Ha Ha.  Apparently, without the Ba Ha Ha fleet there, the town is a virtual ghost town.  One taco stand was open and a small market.  Nothing else.  Still the anchorage was nice and Freedom took on some fuel.  All systems are working well.  The SAT phone has been a Godsend as we have  discussed repairs and problem solved from California and been able to share all of that information in minutes to some remote fishing village in Mexico.  Continuing south today on a day-sail schedule. We've "next-day-aired" some things to take with us.  Hope they make it to Cabo  before we do!

Cabo Colonet

by Freedom Crew on 07/13/10

Freedom is at anchor tonight in Cabo Colonet.  It was gale force winds they played in today as they sailed down and freezing cold!  I suggested removing the new bimini top to afford exposure to sun. Jonathan has spent so much time in the Gulf that under 90 is freezing.  I'm sure it was warmer than SF Bay.  In just a few more days they will be welcoming shade!  The same old starter issues we've struggled with for over a year now, are haunting them tonight.  Our new SAT phone is great - we've had emails and voice contact today - a big price to pay for the comfort of knowing our crew is safe.  A few minutes ago as I was speaking to Jonathan a fishing boat was coming up to starboard with dinner!  Two more weeks and we'll be there too!

Encenada again

by Freedom Crew on 07/13/10

Freedom pulled into Encenada yesterday afternoon.  For an overnight - just port fees - $100!  The crew went into town for dinner.  Talk about a walk down memory lane!
